Creating the conditions for yoga and meditation practice.

Yoga Practice

A blog about a life of practice.

Elizabeth Gilbert quote

Consistency is key!

Creating the conditions that help us to grow in our practice often feels like a sacrifice. Setting aside time, space and energy may at first mean we struggle with resistance.

"I can't do this; I don't know what to do; I haven't got time today; I don't think this is working anyway; It's not worth it; I'm not worth it."

Do any of these excuses sound familiar? Resistance is an inevitable companion in any practice and in reality, in any life well lived because the best things in life come as a reward for our efforts. There's little satisfaction in achieving anything if we didn't have to stretch ourselves in some way. It's overcoming the resistance that helps us grow.

This may not be pleasant but is necessary and a good thing when we understand that the benefits outweigh the costs.

My teacher often says that time on the mat is like making regular deposits into a savings account. At first you might miss having the extra money in your hand but after a while you don't notice anymore, and as your savings grow and you're getting closer to affording the thing you've been saving for, it all becomes worth it.

Don't skimp on your practice. Set up a regular time and place and get started. Consistency is more important than the quantity or the quality.
